Background: MIKE RYAN OF NEW ZEALAND THWARTED A STRONG JAPANESE CHALLENGE WHEN HE WON THE INTERNATIONAL MARATHON AT FUKUOKA, IN WESTERN JAPAN, ON SUNDAY (NOVEMBER 27).

RYAN HAD ONLY THREE OR FOUR YARDS (METRES) TO SPARE WHEN HE CROSSED THE WINNING LINE AHEAD OF JAPAN'S HIDEKUNI HIROSHIMA.

THE NEW ZEALANDER BROKE AWAY FROM THE MAIN BUNCH AFTER ABOUT 18 MILES (29 KMS) OF THE 26-MILE (43-KM) COURSE, BUT HE WAS SERIOUSLY CHALLENGED AFTER ENTERING THE TRACK FOR THE FINAL LAP.

HIROSHIMA SLOWLY CLOSED RYAN'S LEAD AND IN THE BACKSTRAIGHT THE TWO WERE SHOULDER-TO-SHOULDER.

BUT RYAN LENGTHENED HIS STRIDE AND WON IN TWO HOURS 14 MINUTES 4.6 SECONDS - HIS BEST TIME FOR THE MARATHON.

JAPANESE RUNNERS FILLED THE THIRD, FOURTH AND FIFTH PLACES, AND A HUNGARIAN WAS SIXTH.

RYAN, WHO IS AGED 25, WON A BRONZE MEDAL AT THIS YEAR'S BRITISH COMMONWEALTH GAMES IN KINGSTON, JAMAICA.

INTERVIEWED AS HE SIPPED A SOFT DRINK AFTER THE RACE, RYAN SAID HE HAD BEEN FEELING GOOD BEFOREHAND. HE ADDED: "I FELT VERY CONFIDENT.....ONLY I DIDN'T WANT TO SAY SO."
