  • Description

Defense Department Release entitled Berlin Alert.Release reads as follows:
Approximately 1,500 American troops participate in a three hour routine surprise alert exercise at McNair Barracks near Berlin. The alert is part of the Army's program to keep its troops in a continual ready-and-strike state.

In such an exercise, the battle group headquarters is notified first and given instructions, then the alert is sounded to the troops.Troops must be in full readiness to move out, not knowing if the alert is signaling a practice operation or actual combat. The exercises may last from a few hours to several days.

On the cue, infantry units pick up ammunition, rations, and prepare for final inspection before boarding trucks and personnel carriers.Meanwhile, the Signal Company leaves to set up lines of communications, and the armour unit loads ammunition, swings tanks into position, and gets its convey enroute.

As in Berlin, battle group units are seldom located together making the time element important. It is necessary to anticipate the time it will take the units to mobilize, reach the target area and set up equipment so the battle group can function in its completeness.
