Background: Chess Grand Masters Bobby Fischer of the United States and Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union began a twelve match game in the San Martin Theatre in Buenos Aires on Thursday (30 September) to decide which of them will challenge Boris Spassky for the world title he took from his fellow countryman Petrosian in 1969.

Millions of chess fans throughout the world consider this to be potentially the most exciting match to be played since the last war. On trial are the total differences in temperament and style between the two masters. Fischer is a volatile player. Petrosian, the older man is filmed for long drawn out defensive tactics.

SYNOPSIS: Chess Grand Masters Bobby Fischer of the USA and Tigran Petrosian of the Soviet Union began a twelve match tussle in Buenos Aires on Thursday to decide which of them will challenge world champion Boris Spassky for his title.

On trial are two totally different temperaments and styles of play. Twenty eight year old Fischer is a volatile player. He become the world's youngest Grand Master at the age of fifteen.

Tigran Petrosian, at 42, is famed for his superb mastery of long drawn out defensive tactics. Tactics which once forced an opponent to retire with nervous exhaustion. Now, chess fans see this new match as the most exciting since the war.

Chess masters have forecast that if Petrosian can halve or win early games, Fischer's temperament will be put to its toughest test yet. But he is the first westerner to come anywhere near the Soviets. They have kept a tight grip on the world crown since championship matches were resumed at the end of the last war.
