  • Description

Five men were killed and two seriously injured yesterday (Friday) as the giant dome of a Franco-West German nuclear reactor under construction at Grenoble crashed down in a hail of 200-tons of concrete.

The high-flux reactor, housed in a cylindrical building, is being built at the Franco-German Scientific Institute near Franco's Nuclear Study Centre. It is part of a January, 1967, agreement between the two countries and is due to go into operation later this year.

As one of the sections of the metal dome was being hoisted to the top of the building under construction it apparently slipped and Sell, crashing down and taking the rest of the roof with it.

Four of the dead men are reported to have fallen from the scaffolding which also came down from the top of the 100-foot (30 metre) building-the fifth was trapped under the mass of broken concrete and twisted metal. All of them are said to be North Africans.

Nuclear officials have stressed that no radioactive material was as yet on the site.
