SYNOPSIS: The South American track and field championships are being held in Lima, Peru until next Sunday.

The final of the men's 100 metres. The race was won by Felix Mata of Venezuela from Pedro Bassart of Argentina with Luis Gonzaga of Brazil third. Mata's winning time of 10-point-six seconds was well outside the South American record, ten seconds, set by Horacio Estevez of Venezuela.

In the final of the women's 200 metres, Josefa Vicent of Uruguay took the tape ahead of Elsy Rivas of Colombia and Angela Godoy of Argentina. Her time was 24-point-4 seconds. Miss Vicent's win was a great boost for Uruguay's women athletes although at the end of the second day's competition, Argentina's women were well on top of the competition.

The strong Brazilian men's team was leading the men at the end of the second day. The man's 400 metres event saw a winner for Peru. Acevedo of Peru was first, ahead of Rabaca and Francisco of Brazil in second and third places. The South American Games are being contested by athletes from II nations, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela and Panama. They started last Saturday.

One of the hardest fought events was the women's javelin. It was won by Anna Maria Campillay of Argentina with a throw of 43-point-92 metres.

There was drama in the women's 100 metres hurdles. This event was won by the Argentine runner, Emilia Dyrzka, with Lilian Cragno of Argentina second and Valdea Chagas of Brazil third. After the race, a distressed Miss Cragno had to be assisted from the track.
