Argentinian Labour Leader Jose Alonso was machine-gunned to death near his Buenos Aires home on Thursday.... the second murder of a Union Official in fourteen months. The fifty-seven years old leader of 30,000 garment workers was gunned down by two men when his car was intercepted and stopped by three other vehicles shortly after he left home on his way to Union headquarters.
Police said that the killers knocked the driver of Mr Alonso's car unconscious and then machine-gunned the Union leader to death. So far no clue to the identity of the murderers has been found but their car was located some miles from the scene of the murder.
It was feared that the killing could spark a nation-wide protest strike. Moves are underway to strengthen security arrangements around other Union leaders following the murder.
Augusto Vandor, head of the powerful Metalworkers' Union was shot to death at his Union headquarters on June 30 last year. His killers were never caught.
