    THE PRIME MINISTER OF MALAYSIA, TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, ON SATURDAY (29 MARCH) LAUNCHED HIS RULING ALLIANCE PARTY'S FORTHCOMING ELECTION CAMPAIGN AT A MASS RALLY IN THE CAPITAL OF KUALA LUMPUR, ATTENDED BY MORE THAN 20,000 PEOPLE, MORE THAN 3 1/2-MILLION MALAYSIAN VOTERS WILL GO TO THE POLLS ON MAY 10.

    THE ELECTIONS, WHICH WILL COVER BOTH FEDERAL AND STATE PARLIAMENT'S, ARE MALAYSIA'S THIRD SINCE INDEPENDENCE.

    IN EASTERN MALAYSIA, SARAWAK'S POLL WILL LAST FROM MAY 10 TO JUNE 7, AND IT WILL BE THE FIRST TIME SARAWAK HAS TAKEN PART DIRECTLY IN FEDERAL ELECTIONS. IN SABAH, FORMERLY BRITISH NORTH BORNEO, THE POLL, ALSO SABAH'S FIRST FEDERAL ONE, WILL COVER A 15-DAY PERIOD FROM MAY 10 TO MAY 25.

    THE TUNKU'S ALLIANCE PARTY HAS CHOSEN A "BETTER DEAL FOR ALL" AS ITS ELECTION MANIFESTO. THE PARTY CONSISTS OF THREE PARTIES -- THE UNITED MALAY NATIONAL ORGANISATION, LED BY THE TUNKU, THE MALAYSIAN CHINESE ASSOCIATION, LED BY FINANCE MINISTER TUN TAN SIEW SIN, AND THE MALAYSIAN INDIAN ASSOCIATION, LED BY TUN V.T. SAMBANTHAN, MINISTERS OF WORKS, POSTS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS.

    THE TUNKU, GREETED BY SHOUTS OF "BAPA MALAYSIA" -- OR FATHER OF MALAYSIA -- TOLD THE RALLY CROWD THAT THE ELECTIONS WERE AN IMPORTANT MATTER FOR A COUNTRY WHICH SUBSCRIBED TO PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY.

    THE POLL COMES AT A TIME OF UNREST OVER GROWING UNEMPLOYMENT AND RACIAL ISSUES.
