Background: A tumultuous welcome greeted 19 years old Maria Bueno, this year's winner of the Women's Singles Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon, July 4, when she arrived at Sao Paulo Airport, July 10.
Brazil's President, Juscelino Kubitshek telegraphed her an invitation to come home immediately after she won the title by beating American Darlene Hard 6-4, 6-3, in the Final.
At the Airport she was met by her mother with a sash in the Brazilian colours, Green and Yellow, but so great was the crowd that police had great difficulty in keeping them out of the plane itself.
Confetti showered on her and the crowd cheered her in wild delight and enthusiasm as she drove on a decorated fire engine from the Airport to the City Centre and the Tiete Tennis Club where she first learned to play.
Brazil had seen nothing like this since the arrival back home of her World champion Soccer team.
