Background: THE EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS' CUP - EUROPE'S SECOND MOST IMPORTANT SOCCER PRIZE AFTER THE EUROPEAN CUP -- WENT TO WEST GERMANY FOR THE FIRST TIME TONIGHT (THURSDAY) WHEN BORUSSIA DORTMUND BEAT LIVERPOOL OF ENGLAND 2-1 IN THE FINAL AT GLASGOW'S HAMPDEN PARK, IN SCOTLAND. THE GERMANS' WINNING GOAL GAME 13 MINUTES FROM THE END OF THE 30 MINUTE EXTRA TIME PERIOD AFTER THE SCORE HAD BEEN 1-1 AFTER 90 MINUTES.

THE EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS' CUP IS FOR CLUB SIDES THAT HAVE WON THEIR COUNTRY'S NATIONAL CUP COMPETITIONS. TODAY'S GAME IN SCOTLAND WAS PLAYED THROUGHOUT IN HEAVY RAIN, BUT AT LIGHTING SPEED. ALTHOUGH LIVERPOOL HAD MORE OF THE PLAY AND WERE THE STRONGER AT THE FINISH, THE GERMANS ALWAYS SEEMED THE MORE DANGEROUS SIDE - PARTICULARLY IN BREAKAWAYS.

BOTH BORUSSIA GOALS CAME FROM QUICK BREAKS FROM DEFENCE. THE TWO SIDES WERE DEADLOCKED WITH NO SCORE UNTIL THE 62ND MINUTE. OUTSIDE-LEFT LOTHAR EMMERICH CROSSED INTO THE LIVERPOOL GOALMOUTH WHERE THE UNMARKED CENTRE-FORWARD, SIGLI HELD, BLASTED THE BALL PAST GOALKEEPER LAWRENCE FROM 15 YARDS (14 METRES) OUT.

LIVERPOOL TOOK ONLY SIX MINUTES TO EQUALISE. LEFT-WINGER PETER THOMPSON BEAT THREE DEFENDERS IN A DAZZLING RUN AND PASSED THE BALL TO INSIDE-RIGHT ROGER HUNT, WHO HAMMERED IT HOME. THE GERMANS CLAIMED THE BALL HAD CROSSED THE LINE BEFORE THOMPSON CROSSED, BUT THE REFEREE ALLOWED THE SCORE TO STAND.

DURING THE EXTRA TIME, LIVERPOOL WERE THE STRONGER SIDE, AND BORUSSIA'S GOALKEEPER HANS TILKOWSKI MADE SEVERAL BRAVE SAVES. JUST WHEN LIVERPOOL SEEMED ON THE VERGE OF VICTORY, IT WAS BORUSSIA WHICH SCORED -- AND WON THE MATCH. LAWRENCE LEFT HIS GOAL TO MEET THE ONRUSHING SIGLI HELD AND THEN HAD TO SCRAMBLE BACK AS THE BALL REBOUNDED TO THE RIGHT WING.

OUTS: DE-RIGHT STAN LUBUDA SWUNG THE BALL ACROSS AND LIVERPOOL CENTRE-HALF RON YEATS MADE A DESPAIRING EFFORT TO KEEP THE BALL OUT, BUT IT STRUCK A POST AND RICOCHETED INTO THE NET.
