  • Description

Dr. Salvador Allende, Latin America's first free-elected Marxist head of state, was formally installed as Chile's new head of state on Tuesday (November 3.)
At a colourful ceremony in Santiago, the 62-year-old leader of the leftist Popular Unity Front was sworn in for a six-year term at a joint session of Congress. His new government includes three Communist and four Socialist ministers.

Receiving the traditional sash of office from the outgoing President Eduardo Frei, Dr. Allende swore to respect the Chilean constitution. He has pledged that his government, though it will be neither Socialist nor Communist, will nevertheless lay the basic for a future Socialist state in Chile.

Tens of thousands of cheering leftwing supporters of the new President jammed the streets around the Congress Building during the ceremony. Now they will be waiting to see whether the new government can carry out its leftwing programme of nationalisation while standing cordial relations with the United States and other western powers.
