  • Description

A new high-speed helicopter, developed by the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation for the United States Army extensively tested at the Army's Proving Ground in the Arizona Desert.

The new machine, known as "Cheyenne", has performed extensive flight and firing tests. All weapons have performed with remarkable, but predicted accuracy.

For attack, the Cheyenne flies at speed at low-level, thus avoiding radar or visual sightings. Its speed is said to be far in excess of any other US armed helicopter in service.

A major feature of the Cheyenne is its right rotor which makes it a very stable gun platform. Its fire-power is formidable.

Accuracy of weapons is assured by a new, computerised fire control system. One of the weapons is the TOW missile tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided - standard equipment for the Cheyenne, but never until now, fired from an aircraft.

Rockets, a grenade launcher and 30 millimeter cannon, make up the helicopter's fire power.

Another feature is that the gunner-co-pilot can swivel through a complete circle while the pilot follows a straight course. The pilot can also fire the machine guns, aiming through a sight built into his helmet. The computer automatically points the guns wherever the pilot looks.

The Cheyenne, which is considered "a major technological step forward", will, within the next few weeks - according to Lockheed engineers - have completed all its tests. It will, they claim come close to meeting all the original performance specifications laid down by the Army. The Cheyenne is described as the "most versatile and potant air weapon ever developed for the Army".
