SYNOPSIS: Thousands of jubilant people thronged the streets of Dacca on Monday, cheering and firing shots into the air in a spontaneous reaction to the announcement about the promised release of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The Sheikh's eldest son led one crowd of excited Bengalis in slogans and cheers.

Earlier in the day, people had raced through the streets of the city spreading the news of the pledge to release the East Pakistani leader unconditionally in West Pakistan. People had commandeered buses and lorries and had driven through the streets chanting and cheering thorough loud-hailers.

Inside the breakaway Sheikh's residence posters decorated the walls. The Sheikh's immediate family showed visible emotion over the news and a steady stream of self-styled Bangladesh leaders had called throughout the afternoon with congratulations for Begum Mujibur. The release of Sheikh Mujib has been the main policy of the self proclaimed Government of Bangladesh, which arrived in Dacca from India two weeks ago.
