  • Description

Right-wing Falangists Thursday (May 22) demanded the resignation of the Spanish Government after attending a memorial service in Madrid for people allegedly killed by Basque nationalist guerrillas.

Following the service some 500 demonstrators marched to police headquarters and handed out leaflets calling for the Government's resignation.

The leaflet also said that U.S. President Gerald Ford who is due to pay an official visit to Spain on May 31 "must be received by a Government that represents the Spanish people".

Police cleared the streets to allow the demonstration to pass and took no action.

After the church service, crowds outside raised their arms in the fascist salute and sang the Falangist hymn "Cara al Sol".

Since a state of emergency was declared in two of the three Basque provinces on April 26, three policemen have been shot dead and three suspected Basque nationalist guerrillas have been killed in gun battles with police.
