    WALKERS WERE NOT PERMITTED TO TAKE ANY DRINK UNTIL THEY COMPLETED TEN MILES: THOSE WHO BROKE THE RULE WERE DISQUALIFIED - AND THERE WERE MANY.

    THE OLDEST COMPETITOR WAS AN EIGHTY-YEAR-OLD SINGHALESE: THE YOUNGEST WAS A TWELVE-YEAR-OLD INDIAN GIRL, A "VETERAN" IN THE WOMEN'S SECTION.
