  • Description

Austrian sculptors are holding their latest exhibition in a quarry.

It's at Bernstein in Burgenland, near the Hungarian border, where unusually large blocks of serpentine rock were discovered recently.

A group of sculptors have shaped and polished the blocks and put them on display on the floor of the quarry.

The serpentine blocks found at Bernstein are much larger than those found elsewhere in Europe, and the rock has a dark-green translucent quality. Known as Austrian jade, it has been used by local craftsmen for many years to make small pieces of art for the tourist trade.
