    Background: LEBANON/JERUSALEM

Israel no longer believes the United nations or any other peacekeeping force can guarantee its safety, Israeli Defence Minister Ariel Sharon claimed in Jerusalem on September 8. Mr Sharon told a special Knesset session that Israeli will seek a security zone of 40-50 km free of threatening artillery other terrorist forces. During the debate on threatening artillery and other terrorist forces. During the debate on the Israeli government's handling of the Lebanese campaign and President Reagan's Middle East Peace initiative, prime Minister Menachem Begin said the Israeli army had brought peace to Galilee. Despite heckling from opposition Labour Party members, the Knesset approved Mr. Begin's ruling coalition by a 50-40 vote of confidence. On the latest U.S. peace proposals, Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir said Israeli had agreed to far reaching concessions in the Sinai region under the Camp David Accords of 1978. Israeli government leaders have rejected President Reagan's initiative and warned the United States not to try and enforce its acceptance.
