  • Description

Piero Gros of Italy won the Gold medal in the Special Slalom in Innsbruck on Saturday (Feb 14) to give Italy its first and only gold medal of the Winter Olympics.

SYNOPSIS: After the first leg of the two-leg special slalom, Willy Frommelt of tiny Liechtenstein was leading, followed by the World Cup champion Gustavo Thoeni of Italy and the West German Wolfgang Junginger, who's seen here ending his second run.

However, 21-year-old Piero Gros of Italy, a slalom specialist, then put in a very fast time to shoot him into the lead. He had been in fifth position after the first leg.

There were hundreds of Italians lining the course, many with banners bearing the name of Gustavo Thoeni who was generally regarded as the favourite for the event. But about mid-way down the track, Thoeni skidded going round a gate and lost a valuable fraction of a second. Eis final time was 44/100ths of a second behind team-mate Gros, giving him the silver medal.

Now only Frommelt of Liechtenstein was in the position to pose a serious threat. The icy track was becoming badly rutted, and the snow which feel continually during both runs was also a handicap. Try as he might, Frommelt was unable to maintain his first-leg advantage, and he had to be content with the bronze medal.

The Italians had good reason to rejoice, and Gustavo Thoeni's second place was also good enough to win him the combined skiing title, from eh downhill, giant slalom and special slalom events-for which there is, however, no medal.
