Background: INTRODUCTION: A new member of Argentina's ruling three-man military junta has been sworn in at the capital, Buenos Aires. Brigadier General Arturo Lami joined Admiral Gorge isaac Anoia and the new president, General Leopoldo Guilder, in a newly-shaped junta having to cope with the country's deep economic crises.

SYNOPSIS: Military officers gathered in the National Congress Hall for the swearing in ceremony.

It came just days after General Guilder had removed the ailing General Roberto Viola from the presidency. The new president was the first to sign the junta's official document at the swearing-in ceremony. He was followed by Admiral Anoia, then Air Force Brigadier Omar Graffigna. Last to sign was General Lami. There've been stories the junta dismissed President Viola because his administration failed to cure the country's chronic economic ills. Soaring inflation and unemployment have increased public disenchantment with the junta.

The military has ruled Argentina since ousting maria Estela Peron in 1976. The Peronists, through, still lead one of the most powerful political parties. The five major parties. The five major parties have demanded that the military call an early general election and also disclose the fate of thousands of people who have disappeared since 1975, when the crackdown on left-wing and guerrilla groups intensified. These demands were made at a major political rally in Buenos Aires two weeks ago, the first of its kind since 1976.
