  • Description

Fighting between right-wing Lebanese Christian Falangists and Palestinian supporters during a demonstration in Sydney on Sunday (8 June) was described as one of the most bitter and potentially dangerous political demonstrations ever seen in the city for many years.

The incident occurred when a group of about 100 supporters of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) called at the Lebanese Consulate in the Australian city and attempted to present a petition to the newly-appointed Lebanese Consul Sohail Fraige.

Police were called and found one of the men in the Consulate grounds carrying an automatic pistol and 33 rounds of ammunition. He was arrested and the others were ordered to leave.

Minutes later fighting broke out as the PLO supporters clashed with the 200 strong Lebanese Christians who had amassed outside.

Sydney police later found more arms. Nine people appeared in court on the following day. Only one person was hurt during the fighting.
