INTRODUCTION: East European competitors dominated the second day of the sixth European Junior Alpine Ski Championships at Kranjska Gora, Yugoslavia on Saturday (5 March).

SYNOPSIS: In the giant slalom event--one of the most demanding exercises in competitive ski-ing -- 17-year-old Boris Strel of Yugoslavia clocked the fastest time on the first leg. Despite a slower second run he best Wolfram Ortner of Austria into second place by more than a second. Junior skiers from about 13 east and west European countries took part in the championships, which are a testing ground for those who aspire to eventual international stardom.

A proud moment for Strel. In the women's giant slalom Jana Soltvsova of Czechoslovakia beat her compatriot Olga Charvatova by a mere ten-hundredths of a second.

Leonardo David of Italy ski-ing for third place in the men's giant slalom. He finished only a fiftieth of a second behind the second place man.
