  • Description

A Swedish driver, Gunnar Nilsson, came home first to take the honours in the Atlantic International Championship Race for 1.6 litre cars run at Brands Hatch in Kent, U.K., on Sunday (14 September).

With driving conditions severely hampered because of heavy rain, many of the 34 racers had a hard time staying on the track....and in the race. But Nilsson, number 59, established his superiority early in the race, and hung on to win in the Chevron Ford Hart B29.

It was a good day for the Chevron Ford cars. New Zealander Brett Rilay, driving car number 40 -- a Chevron Ford Nicholson -- came in second, with British driver Brian Henton, in a Wheatcroft Ford Nicholson, third.

The race was the last for 1.6 litre cars in the current John Player Championship series.

Points leader in the Atlantic International Championship table, Tony Brise put in a disappointing performance....but his total of 144 ensures him of victory.
