Background: The Transatlantic Challenge Cup, highlight of the North America Soccer season, ended in defeat for the New York Cosmos, who lost 3-4 on home ground to the Chicago Stings. All Cosmos needed to win the cup was a tie. But at the end of the first half, it became obvious they were going to suffer their first home defeat. Chicago's Karl-Heinz Granitza scored the first goal of the match in the 27th minute, but Giorgio Chingala, who scored all three Cosmos goals, equalised in the 33rd minute, after Chicago goalkeeper Dieter Ferner had strayed too far from his post. In the following ten minutes, Cosmos' chances to win their second Transatlantic Cup in three years vanished when Arno Steffenhagen scored two goals in succession. Cosmos' efforts to retrieve the situation in the second half were beaten back by their opponents. Chingala's penalty kick in the 72nd minute gave the home team its second goal, but Hill soon made it 4-2 for the Chicago Stings, and a third goal by Chingala merely narrowed the score down. The result, disappointing for Cosmos, did not spoil the quality of play. The fans were rewarded with one of the most exciting games played at Giants Stadium this year.
