  • Description

INTRODUCTION: The International Olympic Committee General Assembly in the Ivory Coast has come to an end, after passing a resolution calling for all Olympic members to ban any form of competition with nations which have either been suspended or lost IOC recognition. The resolution was aimed at New Zealand and other countries which have maintained sporting links with South Africa, in an effort to isolate the southern African state from world sport.

SYNOPSIS: After the General Assembly, and a week-long series of meetings with other sporting bodies, the IOC delegation paid a courtesy call on Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny at his home village of Yamoussokro, 150 miles (250 kilometres) from the capital, Abidjan.

Accompanying the delegation, led by its President, Lord Killanin, was a team from the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa, led by Secretary-General Jean-Claude Ganga. Members of some of the 90 National Olympic Committees who took part in the IOC talks were also present. It was the Supreme Council for Sport which led the African boycott of the Montreal Olympic Games last year to support the campaign to isolate South Africa.

Lord Killanin said no action would be taken against those who boycotted the Montreal Olympics.
