SYNOPSIS: The Central African Republic celebrated the fourteenth anniversary of its independence from France on Tuesday.

The celebrations were attended by a number of African Presidents and Foreign Ministers, who were in Bangui, the Republic's capital, for the OCAM summit meeting, which ended on Monday night. Bangui has recently become headquarters for the ten-nation organisation.

Among the distinguished guests were President Houphouet-Boigny of the Ivory Coast, Senegal's President Senghor and President Lamizana of Upper Volta.

However, weather conditions were far from ideal.

As the republic's president, Colonel Jean Bedel Bokassa, arrived....it began raining heavily.

The main event was a parade, in which our thousand people participated. They included members of the armed forces, women's and workers' organisations and school children.

The parade took two hours to pass the saluting base.

As well as the marchers, there were cyclists and a number of decorated floats depicting aspects of life in the republic.

The rain, however, did not dampen the spirit of the celebration, which continued all over the city, and well into the night.
