Background: VISNEWS saw Dr. Adenauer at Bonn, June 5, when he announced his intention to continue in office as West German Chancellor.

He made it plain that he did not wish to stand as Christian Democratic candidate for the Presidency in the election to, be hold on July 1 by the Federal Assembly to find a successor to the present President, the 75 years-old Dr. House.

Leaders of his party, the Christian Democrats, in accepting Dr. Adensuer's decision denied that his decision was due to considerations regarding his successor as Chancellor, which rested between his own choice, Herr Etzel, Finance Minister, and the Party's own preference, 1 1/2 Erhard, present Vice-Chancellor and Economies Minister.

The Federal chancellor's decision not to give up power (The office of Federal President is a non-political one) is an indication of his firmness of character, and his determination to see a continuation of his policy, including an unyielding attitude to Russia.
