  • Description

Even losers in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo will be at least partial winners, provided that is, they are contestants in the men's and women's canoe racing events. The canoe races will not be held in the Japanese capital, but will take place in Kanagawa Prefecture, one of Japan's primary scenic areas that is famed as a tourist lure.

On Lake Sagami, bordering picture-postcard Mt.Fuji, Japan's sacred symbol, preparations are going ahead for the holding of the canoe events. In the shadow of the symmetrical mountain workmen are busily erecting boathouses to hold the canoes of the participating nations.

Japanese canoists, meanwhile, are getting training paddling rhythmically over the lake's smooth surface, giving them opportunities not only to improve their form and their timing, but also to escape the city's sweltering heat and enjoy some of Japan's loveliest scenery.
