French pop music fans besieged a Paris church on Tuesday to glimpse the wedding to two top singing stars. Sheila, an idol of the fans for the past decade, married Ringo who rose to fame last year with his first million-selling record.
Police struggled to keep the crowds away from the couple after the church ceremony. Wildly excited fans had also mobbed the couple after the earlier civil ceremony at a town hall -- some onlookers fainted, others were crushed.
Sheila, real name Annie Chancel, rose to fame ten years ago at the age of 16 with her song "L'Ecole Est Finie" (School is Over). Ringo -- 26-year-old Guy Bayle -- made his name last year with the golden disc "Je Ne Veux Qu'Elle" (She's the only one for me).
SYNOPSIS: In Paris, fans were out in force on Tuesday for the pop music wedding of the decade. They besieged the church where singing star Sheila, who has been at the top of the French music world since she was sixteen, was married to Ringo, who rose to fame only last year. Ringo's first million selling disc might have been dedicated to his bride. It was entitled "Je Ne Veux Qu'Elle" -- "She's the only one for me."
Some onlookers were crushed and others fainted as fans surged round the couple's car. And the police had their work cut out to clear a way through the crowds.
At one stage it took the bridal car half an hour to travel thirty yards. Sheila, real name Annie Chancel, was briefly a market sweet-seller before soaring to stardom with the song "L'Ecole est Finie" -- "School is over" -- ten years ago. Both bride and groom are twenty-six. Sheila first met Ringo, whose real name is Guy Bayle, eighteen months ago. And one of their ambitions, according to Sheila, is to record a lovesong together.
