  • Description

THE RHODESIAN PARLIAMENT MET YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) AFTER PUBLICATION OF THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER'S WARNING WHICH DETAILED THE EFFECT OF RHODESIA DECLARING INDEPENDENCE UNILATERALLY.

MR. WILSON WARNED THE RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. SMITH, IN A LETTER THAT "A DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE WOULD BE AN OPEN ACT OF DEFIANCE AND REBELLION, AND IT WOULD BE TREASONABLE TO TAKE STEPS TO GIVE EFFECT TO IT."
THE LETTER ALSO POINTED OUT THAT THE COMMONWEALTH PRIME MINISTERS' CONFERENCE LAST JULY MADE IT CLEAR THAT NO COMMONWEALTH GOVERNMENT WOULD BE ABLE TO RECOGNISE A UNILATERAL DECLARATION.

FOR THE PEOPLE OF RHODESIA, IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT SUCH A WARNING HAD BEEN MADE PUBLIC AND THE NEWSPAPER VENDORS WERE SOON SOLD OUT.

IT WAS A BUSY TIME TOO FOR THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER IN SALISBURY, MR. J.B. JOHNSTON, NOW AT THE CENTRE OF A CRISIS THAT HAS COME ABOUT BECAUSE BRITAIN OBJECTS TO RHODESIA GAINING INDEPENDENCE WHILE THE MAJORITY AFRICAN POPULATION OF THE COUNTRY IS LEFT WITHOUT A SHARE IN THE GOVERNMENT.

WHEN PARLIAMENT MET, THE MEMBERS HEARD MR. SMITH ACCUSE THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER OF BLACKMAIL AND INTIMIDATION FOR REQUESTING AN ASSURANCE THAT THERE WOULD BE NO UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. HE SAID THAT BRITAIN'S BEHAVIOUR HAD HELPED TO UNITE THE PEOPLE OF RHODESIA MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE.

THE FORMER RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. WINSTON FIELD, MADE ONE OF HIS RARE INTERVENTIONS IN PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE TO SAY THAT MR. WILSON'S LETTER WAS A BLATANT CASE OF BULLYING. "I HOPE WE DON'T GIVE IN," HE ADDED.

WHILE RHODESIA WAITS FOR THE REFERENDUM ON INDEPENDENCE TO BE HELD IN EIGHT DAYS' TIME, THE BRITISH CABINET MET TODAY IN LONDON TO REVIEW THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CRISIS. THE CHIEF OF THE DEFENCE STAFF, EARL MOUNTBATTEN, WAS AMONG THOSE AT THE HOUR-LONG MEETING.
