    RISING TIDES FOLLOWING THE 75 MILES PER HOUR WINDS THREATENED SHIPS IN AND AROUND THE HARBOUR.

    THE TYPHOON, CODENAMED "VERA" STRUCK HONSHU, JAPAN'S MAIN ISLAND, ON SATURDAY NIGHT AND BY SUNDAY IT HAD LEFT BEHIND A HUGE TOLL IN LIVES AND PROPERTY. AN OFFICIAL COUNT SAID 1,159 HAD DIED, 1,458 MISSING AND 4,695 INJURED IN THE STORM WHICH RAKED THE COUNTRY.

    BUT CASUALTY FIGURES WERE EXPECTED TO RAISE FURTHER FIELDS WERE FLOODED BEYOND RECOGNITION THE TYPHOON DESTROYED MORE THAN 37,000 HOUSES WHILE ANOTHER 350,000 WERE FLOODED, LEAVING ALMOST A MILLION PEOPLE HOMELESS.

    BUSES AND CARS TRIED TO PLOUGH THROUGH FLOODED STREETS, BUT THE RISING TIDE DROVE ALL TRAFFIC OFF THE STREETS
    FALLEN BUILDINGS AND RAGING TORRENTS ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE CAUSED MOST OF THE DEATHS AND RESCUE WORKERS WERE TO RECOVER DEAD BODIES.

    IMMEDIATELY THE TYPHOON LET UP A BIT, RESCUE WORKERS WERE BUSY HELPING PEOPLE EVACUATE THEIR FLOODED HOMES AND SALVAGE WHATEVER PROPERTY THEY COULD.

    THIS WAS THE COMMON SIGHT: BROKEN BUNDS. FLOODED STREETS. TWISTED REMAINS OF WHAT WERE THE DAY BEFORE PEACEFUL HOMES, AND HOMELESS MEN AND WOMEN IN SEARCH OF SHELTER FROM TORRENTIAL RAINS AND ANGRY STORM.
