  • Description

At the Republic of Chad prepares for the arrival of peacekeeping troops from the Organisation of African Unity - the OAU - its capital, N'Djamena has seen the installation of a new multi-factional police force. On Saturday (3 November), Chad's President Goukouni Weddeye inspected his country's new policemen for the first time.

SYNOPSIS: The jeeps had come from France - a gift from the French Army. But Chad's new policemen came from within the four major factions still operating inside the country - after thirteen years of civil war. Their job will be to maintain law and order in the capital.

At this inauguration day, the one-hundred-and-twenty chosen men were asked by interim defence and finance minister Idriss Miskine to transcend all tribal and racial differences and work together to protect the peace.

At an inspection parade President Goukouni Weddeye told the men it was up to them to prove that despite their different loyalties, it was still possible for a multi-factional police force to exist. He said the creation of the police force was a decisive step towards restoring order in N'Djamena, and force shadowed the possible creation one day of a national, multi-factional army.
