  • Description

Hundreds of workers from India's pro-Moscow Communist Party marched through Calcutta's fashionable Chowringhee district in an anti-United States demonstration on Saturday (6 February). They demanded the closure of all American establishments in India. A strong police guard stood between the protesters and the United States Information Service (USIS) building. The demonstration is the latest in a series criticising U.S. support for Pakistan during December's war with India.

With an eye to the forthcoming state elections, the Communist workers also called on Indian prime Minister Mrs. Gandhi to end poverty in the nation.
