Background: Demonstrating students still filled the streets of central Bangkok even after the fall of the military government was announced. They collected around the so-called Democracy Monument, built by the right-wing military dictator, Pibul Sonngram, before World War II to enshrine the new Thai constitutions. There have been some dozen constitutions drawn up since then for Thailand and one of the main student demands in a new one which does away with military rule.

Troops kept in the background after the weekend violence. In the streets sightseers outnumbered students as people came out to inspect the damage. Burned out vehicles and buses were everywhere. Moro then a score of government buildings were gutted. During yesterday (Monday) more attacks were made on police stations. The new army command which took over from the former Prime Minister, marshal Kittickachorn, warned against further violence. The Marshal, his son and the Deputy Premier, Marshal Prapas Charusathiara, were reported to have left Thailand for an unknown destination.
