  • Description

Ethiopians were in a festive mood today, (Sunday July 23) as they celebrated the 80th birthday of their Emperor, Haile Selassie--said to be a descendant of King Solomon. The Emperor, who was crowned on November 2, 1930 and gave his country its first written constitution for 3,000 years, also bear the titles Elect of God, King of Kings and Conquering Lion of Judah.

Throughout the country, special decorations have been put up for the event, which has been proclaimed national holiday.

New postage stamps and souvenir gold coins have been issued to commemorate the occasion, which begins with an 80-gun salute in all major cities and towns and continues with a day of music, traditional dancing, church services and a huge fireworks display in the capital.
