  • Description

HUNDREDS OF YOUNG SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONALIST PARTY SUPPORTERS, MOST OF THEM UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, USED VIOLENCE TO BREAK UP AN ELECTION MEETING OF THE UNITED PARTY ON MONDAY NIGHT AT A SCHOOL HALL IN THE MARGINAL RISSIK CONSTITUENCY, IN PRETORIA. THE RIOTERS EVENTUALLY DISPERSED AFTER A POLICE DOG HAD BEEN SET ON THEM.

OF THE CROWD OF ABOUT 1,000 IN AND OUTSIDE THE HALL AT LEAST THREE-QUARTERS WERE NATIONALIST SUPPORTERS. THEY GAVE THE SPEAKERS NO CHANCE TO TALK, CONSTANTLY CRASHING "STINK BOMBS" AND PELTING THE STAGE WITH STONES, FRUIT, PAPER DARTS MADE OUT OF UNITED PARTY PAMPHLETS, AND OTHER MISSILES.

SUDDENLY THE FROWD SURGED FORWARD, SCREAMING ABUSE AND SWEARING, BUT WERE BRIEFLY KEPT AT BAY BY THE POLICE AND A "STRONG ARM" GROUP OF ABOUT 50 UNITED PARTY YOUTHS, WHO TURNED A FIRE HOSE ON THEM. THEN THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AND THE NATIONALIST PARTY RIOTERS BEGAN THROWING CHAIRS AT THE PLATFORM.

THE SIX POLICEMEN IN THE HALL ORDERED THE CROWD TO LEAVE AFTER THE LIGHTS HAD BEEN TURNED ON AGAIN. A POLICE DOG WAS SET ON THE RIOTERS TO ASSIST THEM ON THEIR WAY, AND THEY LEFT SHOUTING "YEA, TUKS" - THE "WAR CRY" OF PRETORIA UNIVERSITY.
