    THE SARAWAK UNITED PEOPLES PARTY, WHICH HAS BEEN ONE OF THE STRONG CRITICS OF THE PROPOSED MALAYSIA ORGANISED A MASS MEETING IN MIRI, SARAWAK, ADJOINING BRUNEI ON DECEMBER 8 TO CELEBRATE THE 2ND ANNIVERSARY.

    THE GOVERNMENT GAVE PERMISSION ONLY AFTER LOOKING INTO THE GIST OF SPEECHES AND CHECKING ON THE NAMES OF SPEAKERS.

    THE MEETING SITE WAS PROMINENT WITH MANY ANTI MALAYSIA POSTERS, AND POSTERS AGAINST PUBLIC SECURITY LAW UNDER WHICH SOME OF THE PARTY'S MEMBERS HAVE BEEN HELD.

    TO THE MEETING CAME MANY DAYAKS, WHO WERE MOSTLY MEMBERS OF THE PARTY, FROM BAKING AREA IN FOURTH DIVISION. THERE WAS ALSO MR. TAMA WING TINGANG, CHAIRMAN OF BARAM BRANCH OF THE SUPP AND ALSO VICE CHAIRMAN OF THE CENTRAL EXECUTIVE OF THE SUPP IN KUCHING.

    THE MEETING ATTRACTED LOTS OF MALAYS FROM SIBUTI AREA IN SARAWAK, WHICH WAS ONE OF THE STRONGHOLDS OF THE REBELS. THESE MALAYS WERE OF BRUNEI ORIGIN.
