FORD: "We must build a more stable international order, politically, economically, and legally. We must match the great break-troughs of the past century by improving health and conquering disease. We must continue to unlock the secrets of the universe beyond our planet, as well as within ourselves. We must work to enrich the quality of American life at work, at play and in our homes. It is right that Americans are always improving. It is not only right, it is necessary. From need comes action, as it did here, in Independence Hall."

Background: From coast to coast the people of the United States of America celebrated the 200th anniversary of their independence from Great Britain on Sunday (4 July).

SYNOPSIS: As a stately armada of tall ships sailed into New York Harbour, President Ford was speaking in Philadelphia.

There were naval salutes, firework displays, the ringing of church bells, and the blare of military parades as Americans celebrated two hundred years of history. But by far the most impressive spectacle of the day was on the waters around New York's Manhattan Island as the tall sailing ships staged a nautical extravaganza against a backdrop of skyscrapers. The sailing ships came from 35 nations and several million people watched from the shore.

Crowds were so heavy at one point that part of a roadway collapsed, and people who had waited hours were evacuated.
