Background: THE MONUMENTS OF ANGKOR, IN CAMBODIA, HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED AS "THE MOST ASTONISHINGLY BEAUTIFUL RUINS ON EARTH." THEY ARE THE REMAINS OF THE GREAT KHMER EMPIRE OF TEN CENTURIES AGO.

ANGKOR IS 150 MILES (240 KMS) NORTH-WEST OF THE CAMBODIAN CAPITAL, PHNOM PENH. IT LIES IN TROPICAL JUNGLE ON THE TONLE SAP, A TRIBUTARY OF THE MEKONG RIVER. THE VARIOUS KINGS OF THE KHMER EMPIRE BUILT THEIR CAPITALS - MAINLY IN THE FORM OF TEMPLES - IN AND AROUND ANGKOR.

THE EMPIRE HAS ITS EARLIEST KNOWN ORIGIN IN 890 A.D. IT GREW FROM THE GRADUAL MERGING OF EARLIER KINGDOMS IN THE REGION. THE EMPIRE FLOURISHED UNTIL EARLY IN THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY WHEN ANGKOR WAS PILLAGED BY THE SIAMESE ARMY.
