  • Description

THE FIRST EXHIBITION TO BE SEEN IN EUROPE SINCE THE SECOND WORLD WAR OF MEDIEVAL RUMANIAN ART IS ON SHOW IN LONDON.

THE EXHIBITION WILL BE SEEN IN THREE BRITISH CITIES. IT HAD ITS DEBUT AT THE GOVERNMENT-SPONSORED ARTS COUNCIL GALLERY IN LONDON, AND IS PART OF A CULTURAL EXCHANGE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

MOST OF THE WORKS ARE DRAWN FROM COLLECTIONS IN THE BUCHAREST ART MUSEUM AND IN MONASTERIES AND CHURCHES IN RUMANIA. THEY ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE STAGES OF ARTISTIC EVOLUTION IN THREE HISTORIC PROVINCES - TRANSYLVANIA, WALLACHIA AND MOLDAVIA - FROM THE FOURTH TO THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURIES.

THE VISITORS TO THE EXHIBITION FIRST MEETS TWO MOLDAVIAN CROSSES OF 1558, THE FIRST FROM THE MONASTERY OF NEAMT AND THE SECOND FROM THE MONASTERY OF SLATINA. BOTH REPRESENT A PERIOD OF HIGH ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENT IN WOOD SCULPTURE. THEY CARRY SCENES FROM THE LIFE OF CHRIST.

NEXT COME TWO ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS WHICH ARE AMONG THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE CREATIONS OF RUMANIAN MEDIEVAL ART.... THE FIRST IS A GOSPEL BOOK OF 1492 NOW IN THE POSSESSION OF THE BODLEIAN LIBRARY AT OXFORD. LIKE ONE OF THE CROSSES IT CAME FROM THE NEAMT MONASTERY AND IS THE OLDEST ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT FROM MOLDAVIA. THE SECOND MANUSCRIPT IS BOUND IN A PRICELESS COVER OF SILVER GILT, ENGRAVED AND REPOUSSE. THE FRONT BEARS THE SCENE OF THE RESURRECTION AND ON THE BACK A SCENE FROM THE LIFE OF THE VIRGIN.

FINALLY, A SUPERBLY SCULPTURED PAIR OF OAK DOORS ORIGINALLY AT THE MONASTERY OF SNAGOV, NOW DESTROYED. EACH DOOR IS MADE FROM A SINGLE PIECE OF WOOD. IN THE UPPER PART IS THE ANNUNCIATION AND IN THE LOWER, TWO WARRIOR SAINTS ON HORSEBACK - ST. GEORGE AND POSSIBLY ST. DEMETRIUS.

AMONG THOSE AT THE OPENING WITH THE ORGANISERS OF THE EXHIBITION WAS THE BRITISH MINISTER FOR ARTS, MRS. JENNY LEE, AND THE RUMANIAN AMBASSADOR IN LONDON, MR. ALEXANDRU LAZAREANU.
