HE COMPLETED THE COURSE, A DISTANCE OF 226.4 MILES, IN A RECORD TIME OF 2 HOURS 11 MINUTES 13.4 SECONDS. HIS AVERAGE SPEED WAS A SIZZLING 103.51 MILES AN HOUR.

    THE TWENTY FOUR YEAR OLD RIDER, WHO LED THROUGHOUT THE RACE, SMASHED THE OLD LAP RECORD OF 102.62 MILES AN HOUR, AND SET A NEW ONE OF 105.75 MILES AN HOUR. HIS MACHINE WAS AN ITALIAN 500 c.c. M.V. AGUSTA.

    MIKE HAILWOOD OF BRITAIN, ALSO ON AN M.V., HELD SECOND PLACE BEHIND HOCKING FOR FOUR LAPS, BUT LOST HIS POSITION AFTER STARTING AT THE PITS WITH CLUTCH TROUBLE. THIS DELAY OF MORE THAN 13 MINUTES PUT AND 15 RIDERS IN FRONT OF HIM.

    PHIL READ, OF BRITAIN, WHO HAD HELD THIRD PLACE, MOVED INTO SECOND PLACE, BUT RETIRED WITH ENGINE TROUBLE IN THE LAST LAP. ALAN SHEPHERD, ANOTHER A BRITISH RIDER, CRASHED AT BRADDAN BRIDGE IN THE SECOND LAP WHEN HE WAS IN THIRD POSITION. HE WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL WITH CONCUSSION.

    E. BOYCE, OF BRITAIN, RIDING A NORTON, WAS SECOND, ACROSS THE FINISHING LINE WITH A SPEED OF 97.27 MILES AN HOUR. IN THIRD PLACE WAS ANOTHER BRITISH RIDER, F. STEVENS ALSO ON A NORTON, AT 96.24 MILES AN HOUR.
