  • Description

Mayor Lindsay of New York was one of about two hundred cyclists who met recently in Central Park at eight o'clock in the morning to ride downtown to work.

The idea was of course to promote the neglected bike as a non-polluting, healthy form of transport, as opposed to the problematical motor-car.

As Mayor Lindsay put it, bikes are cheaper, smokeless, odourless and fun, even if the streets and air you ride through are not.

Reporters at the event did not notice however that the Mayor only bicycled part of the course, from Central Park near Fifth Avenue and Sixtieth street, down Fifth Avenue and Broadway to Wall Street.

He left the others after only fourteen blocks at 46th street, since he had to make a trip to Washington. To do this he forsook the bicycle for an aircraft.

The film-crew that followed the rest had time to stow their gear in Central Park, drive down-town through slow traffic on the West-side highway, hunt for parking space, set up their camera, and be ready to film the first riders arriving. The journey took the cyclists forty-five minutes.

It might be the fault of the motor-car, but on the evidence it seemed that the day of speedy bike-commuting had not yet arrived.
