SYNOPSIS: World Cup soccer...and in Athens, Greece meets Spain in a preliminary-round match. The game is one of a series in Group Seven which has three entrants.. the two teams playing here, and Yugoslavia. At the start it's Greece to kick-off playing from right to left.
From the beginning there was little to choose between the two sides, but when Spain got into top gear only poor finishing prevented them scoring.. however persistence paid off and Voldes used his head to beat keeper Constantinou.
Half time must have come as a welcome breather for both sides who were piling on the pressure. From the turn-around it was Spain to kick off, and play switched from end to end during a spirited few minutes with forwards from both teams missing opportunities to score.
The crowd of 25 thousand fund plenty to roar about during the match, but the home supporters had some disappointing moments.
However, in the 59th minute they had something to cheer as Koud??? whipped a shot past Spain's Iribar to level the score. The cheers turned sour again a few moments later as Greece missed another chance.
In the 71st minute Claramunt gathered a pass from Valdes and rammed it home to put Spain ahead by 2 goals to one.... only to have Dozmazos level the score again 10 minutes later. But Spain kept up the pressure and Valdes clinched their victory in the 85th minute when he prodded in a shot during a goalmouth melee, to make the final tally 3-2 to Spain.
