  • Description

THOUSANDS OF HINDUS IN SINGAPORE TOOK PART ON THURSDAY IN THE HINDU "FESTIVAL OF PENANCE" -- THAIPUSAM -- WITH ITS ANNUAL THREE-MILE PROCESSION INCLUDING PENITANTS WITH SHARP SPIKES PIERCING THEIR FLESH AND SKEWERS THROUGH THEIR CHEEKS AND TONGUES. MANY WERE CARRYING OUT VOWS TO DO PENANCE FOR THEIR PAST SINS OR AS A DISPLAY OF GRATITUDE TO THE HINDU GOD, SUBRAMANIAM.

TO MANY DEVOTEES, THAIPUSAM, THE BIRTHDAY OF LORD SUBREMANIAM, MEANT A THREE-MILE WALK IN PROCESSION TO THE CHETTIAR TEMPLE. FOLLOWING THE PENITANTS WERE THEIR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES CHANTING INCANTATIONS. THE PENITANTS HAD PREVIOUSLY UNDERGONE A THREE WEEKS TRANSIENT PERIOD OF RELIGIOUS MORTIFICATION AND PURIFICATION.

ACCORDING TO THE HINDU RELIGION, THE THREE WEEKS OF PURIFICATION IS IMPORTANT FOR IT'S SAID TO PUT THE PENITANTS INTO A TRANCE IN WHICH THEY FEEL NO PAIN FROM THE SPIKES IN THEIR FLESH. THIS YEAR, AN ORNATE SILVER CHARIOT DRAWN BY TWO WHITE BULLS WAS USED IN THE FESTIVAL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 38 YEARS.

IN PREVIOUS YEARS, THE 23 FOOT (7 METRE) HIGH CHARIOT COULD NOT BE USED BECAUSE OF LOW HANGING TROLLEY BUS WIRES. THE WIRES HAVE NOW BEEN REMOVED.
