    Before a capacity crowd reigning Wimbledon champion Chris Evert of the United States beat Britain's Sue Barker 6-2, 7-6 to win the women's singles title at the 1976 Gunze World Tennis Championships in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday, (28 November).

    SYNOPSIS: Over four and a half thousand people packed the stadium as the two girls started play -- Miss Evet all out to retain her title for the was a lot of money at stake too -- the winner taking 15 thousand U.S. dollars, with 10 thousand for the runner-up. Britain's number two woman player Sue Barker didn't manager to hold her service once during the first set.

    Although both women traded long rallies from the baseline they also had difficulty controlling their groundstrokes, Sue Barker having the most trouble and eventually taking a sound beating in the first set. there were a total of 12 service breaks in the match.

    Chris Evert's play was below her top championship form -- with several faults which cost her service five times. The second set started on a similar note to the first, with both players trading service during the first four games. They held service at three-three, then Baker broke Evert's serve to go up 5-3 -- but not for long.

    Evert got herself under control, using her enormous reserves of concentration and broke back at 4-5 with a love game. In a tie-breaker the British girl had a chance, but Evert rallied with her powerful two-handed backstroke to win the next three points and the match.
