  • Description

Full scale war appeared to be only a step away on Saturday (4 December), as both India and Pakistan claimed victories in fighting along the borders. India said it had not officially declared war on pakistan, but Prime Minister Indira Gandhi said, "This morning the government of West Pakistan has declared war upon us."
Speaking in a nationwide broadcast reported by Pakistan Radio, President Yahya Khan declared that the time had come to deliver a crushing reply to "the Indian aggressors" and the current war "is going to be the last."
After a night in which Pakistani jets struck at 12 Indian airfields, India said it had thrown its army, navy and air force against the Pakistani forces.

For most of this past week, the number of claims and counter-claims of incursions across the Indo-Pakistani borders have steadily increased. In the major cities of both nations, the people prepared for the possibility of war. On Wednesday (1 December) in Dacca, as seen in this official Pakistan government film, a general strike and rally was held to protest India's stand in the conflict.
