  • Description

Eleven women, ranging in age from 27 to 79, became the first women Episcopalian priests to be admitted to the ministry at a "renegade" ordination service held in defiance of the Church hierarchy in Philadelphia on Monday (July 29).

The ordinations, conducted by three retired bishops and one active bishop at the Church of the Advocate, was seen by church authorities as likely to result in disciplinary action on both the women and the officiating clergy.

Bishop Lyman Ogilby of the Pennsylvania diocese earlier warned the participants that the service would violate church law.

Many people in the large congregation applauded as the first women entered the Episcopalian priesthood. But just before the ordinations several priests stepped forward to object to the ceremony.

"We do not gain eleven priests today. We lose four bishops", said one priest. The women, from eight different states, were already deacons, one step below the priesthood.

The Episcopal Church, the American branch of the Anglican Church, has endorsed the idea of women priests. But the actual law admitting women to the priesthood was defeated on a voting technicality at the church's national convention last year.

The ordaining bishops expect to be tried by the church for their action and see this as a way to resolve the issue of women's equality in the church once and for all.
