    CROWN PRINCE AKIHITO HEADED MEMBERS OF THE JAPANESE IMPERIAL FAMILY AT THE FUNERAL YESTERDAY (MONDAY) OF A SON-IN-LAW OF THE EMPEROR, MR. TAKATSUKASA WHO DIED ACCIDENTALLY IN THE GAS-FILLED FLAT OF A BAR HOSTESS.

    CROWN PRINCE AKIHITO, THE BROTHER OF THE WIDOW, ACCOMPANIED HER AS SHE CARRIED THE URN OF HER HUSBAND'S ASHES AT THE SERVICE. MRS TAKATSUKASA WAS FORMERLY PRINCESS TAKA AND IS THE THIRD DAUGHTER OF EMPEROR HIROHITO.

    MR. TAKATSUKASA'S BODY WAS FOUND BY POLICE ON FRIDAY NIGHT. THE HOSTESS, MICHIKO MAEDA, WAS ALSO FOUND DEAD. THE POLICE SAID BOTH DIED FROM CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING FROM A FAULTY GAS HEATER IN THE FLAT.

    MR. TAKATSUKASA WAS ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER OF THE TOKYO TRANSPORT MUSEUM AND THE JAPAN TRAVEL BUREAU. HE AND HIS WIFE TOURED BRITAIN AND EUROPE IN JULY.
