Background: Over 17,000 youth volunteers wearing brand-new olive green uniforms recently paraded through the streets of Saigon, South Vietnam, carrying kitchen utensils, brooms and guitars before starting a big clean-up of the city.

Prior to this about 25,000 people, including leaders of the Provisional Revolutionary Government, rallied at Thong-Nhut stadium to mark the 45th anniversary of the foundation of the Ho Chi Minh Labour Youth Group.

One youth leader said: "Under the former regime there was a campaign for young men to join the armed forces - but now there is a new campaign aimed at encouraging youth to participate in labour." He added: "It will provide a psychological shock to those young people still sipping beer in the coffee houses or strolling in the streets."
The volunteers, including some servicemen of the former regime, undertook tasks like sweeping the streets, collecting rubbish, digging ditches and clearing drains. Some of them are also expected to build low-cost houses for poor people in new economic zones outside Saigon.
