  • Description

IT IS REPORTED FROM ROME THAT SIGNOR ALDO MORO, WHOSE CENTRE-LEFT COALITION GOVERNMENT RESIGNED ON FRIDAY, MAY SUCCEED HIMSELF AS ITALY'S NEXT PRIME MINISTER.

PRESIDENT GUISEPPE SARAGAT HAS BEEN BUSY IN WEEKEND CONSULTATIONS WITH ITALY'S POLITICAL LEADERS IN ATTEMPTS TO END THE DEADLOCK. HE IS EXPECTED TO CONFER WITH NEARLY 30 OF ITALY'S PROMINENT POLITICIANS.

A FORMER PRIME MINISTER, SIGNOR FANFANI - WHO RESIGNED AS FOREIGN MINISTER LAST MONTH - HAS OFFERED HIS SERVICES FOR THE NEXT GOVERNMENT. HOWEVER, SIGNOR MORO IS SAID TO HAVE MORE CHANCE OF BECOMING PRIME MINISTER THAN SIGNOR FANFANI.

SIGNOR MORO RESIGNED HIS GOVERNMENT AFTER A DEFEAT ON A BILL TO ESTABLISH STATE-RUN KINDERGARTENS.

IT IS POSSIBLE PRESIDENT SARAGAT WILL NOMINATE THE PRIME MINISTER BY TUESDAY. BUT DIFFICULTIES ARE THEN EXPECTED TO ARISE BECAUSE THE SOCIALIST - THE SECOND LARGEST PARTY FORMING THE COALITION - ARE NOT WILLING TO RETURN A COALITION GOVERNMENT UNDER PREVIOUS TERMS. POLITICAL ANALYSTS HAVE SAID THAT THE LARGEST PARTY IN THE COALITION - THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS - VOTED AGAINST THE KINDERGARTEN BILL.

AMONG THE POLITICIANS WHO CONSULTED TODAY (SUNDAY) WITH THE PRESIDENT WERE SIGNOR FANFANI, SIGNOR MARIO SCELBA, CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT, AND SIGNOR INGRAO AND SIGNOR BERNA DEL PARTITO, BOTH OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY.
