  • Description

In a joint-communique issued at the end of British Foreign Minister James Callaghan's visit to Zambia on Friday (3 January) it was announced that Mr Callaghan was to meet South Africa's Prime Minister John Vorster for talks on Rhodesia.

The meeting has since been scheduled to take place at Port Elizabeth, a coastal town in South Africa on Saturday (4 January).

He will be the first high-ranking British Minister to visit the country since the then Prime Minister Harold Macmillan made his 1960 speech there about the nationalist "Wind of Change" blowing across the African continent.

Mr Callaghan is currently on a tour of African countries for talks on the prospect of a settlement in Rhodesia. The meeting with Mr Vorster has been arranged as the South African leader has played a major role behind the scenes in promoting negotiations for a settlement of Rhodesia's constitutional dispute with Britain.

During the news conference, Mr Callaghan said prospects for a settlement were better than ever before because of Anglo-Zambian understanding. He spent four days in Zambia where he discussed the problem with President Kenneth Kaunda.
