    THE MALAY RULERS OF MALAYSIA MET IN KUALA LUMPUR YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AND ELECTED A NEW MALAYSIAN KING. HE IS SULTAN ISMAIL NASIRRUDDIN SHAH, WHO IS 58' OF TRENGGANU, A STATE LOCATED ON THE CENTRAL-EASTERN COAST OF MALAYA. AT THE SAME ROYAL ELECTION WHICH LASTED FOR TWO HOURS, 38-YEARS-OLD SULTAN ABDUL HALIM SHAH, OF KEDAH, A STATE NORTHWEST OF MALAYA, WAS CHOSEN DEPUTY.

    SULTAN ISMAIL IS THE FOURTH MALAYSIAN KING.

    AS IS PROVIDED FOR UNDER THE MALAYSIAN CONSTITUTION, THE NEW KING AND HIS DEPUTY WILL HOLD OFFICE FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. THE SWEARING-IN WILL BE HELD NEXT MONTH--SEPTEMBER 21.

    THE ELECTION WAS PRECEDED BY A CONFERENCE WHICH WAS ATTENDED BY SIX SULTANS AND RULERS OF OTHER STATES. THE GOVERNORS OF THE MALAYSIAN STATES OF SARAWAK AND SABAH WERE ALSO PRESENT. THREE OTHER SULTANS--TWO WAY IN EUROPE AND ONE WHO HAS BECOME INDISPOSED--WERE VOTED BY PROXY THROUGH THEIR BROTHER RULERS.

    THE NEW KING HAS HAD A VARIED CAREER AS AN ADMINISTRATOR. BORN IN JANUARY, 1907, HE STUDIED AT A MALAY COLLEGE IN MALAYA AND JOINED THE TRENGGANU CIVIL SERVICE IN 1929. HE ASCENDED THE TRENGGANU THRONE IN DECEMBER AS TO WHO SHOULD SUCCEED SULTAN ALI, HIS NEPHEW, DEPOSED BY A SPECIAL STATE MEETING.
